About the webinar:
The Royal Commission into Quality and Safety in Aged-Care revealed that too often, residential aged care providers fail to meet the nutritional needs of the elderly. This results in an increased risk of falls and fractures, as well as significant healthcare costs. The issue at hand is a complex interplay between many competing factors and as such, it’s important that preventative, simple and cost-effective strategies are sought and implemented. In this webinar, Dr Sandra Iuliano explores how increasing consumption of milk, cheese and yoghurt can help to tackle malnutrition and fracture risk in aged care settings.
About the speaker:
Dr Sandra Iuliano is a researcher in the area of nutrition and exercise across the lifespan; specifically, to improve musculoskeletal health. She is a strong advocate for improving nutritional care and quality of life via improved food provision in aged care. Relative to ageing, her work has focussed on food-based approaches to prevent falls, fractures and malnutrition in older adults in aged-care, involving Australian residential aged-care facilities. She provided input into the new single framework quality and safety standards for aged care and was summoned to present evidence at the Royal Commission into Quality and Safety in Aged-Care.

Milk, cheese and yoghurt play an integral role in healthy ageing thanks to their unique nutritional and physical structures. However, only 1% of older adults are getting enough from the dairy food group every day (3). These foods offer a tasty and affordable way to reduce malnutrition in older adults.
